Dr Mark Dean

Dr Mark Dean is not exactly a household name, but he is a dynamic force in the development and improvement of our personal computers which are almost universally used. Of the 9 patents that International Business Machines (IBM) used in the first personal computer, Dr Dean holds 3 of them.

A great athlete, he puts the end to the theory that an athlete is not a giant in the classroom as he was at the top of his High School graduating class, also his college class. A remarkably well rounded person. We take a look at the achievements of the remarkable Dr Mark Dean.

Mark Dean was born March 2, 1957 in Jefferson City, Tennessee and even at an early age showed a love of creating and building many items. During his youth, he and his father made a tractor completely from scratch which is much harder than it sounds. His teachers noticed his prowess in mathematics. He graduated as a straight “A” student from Jefferson City High School in 1979. He also graduated at the top of his class at the University of Tennessee where he majored in engineering.

Shortly after graduating from the University of Tennessee, Dean was hired by IBM where he spent most of his career. He soon established himself as a rising star. Working with and collaborating with Dennis Moeller Dean developed the New Industry Standard Architecture (ISA), a system that allowed peripherals like the disk drive, printer and monitor to be plugged directly into computers. This resulted in a much more efficient and better integrated system.

Dean’s work led to the development of the color PC monitor. Most of you have never seen anything except a color monitor, but in my early days they were monochrome, usually a green or amber writing on a black background. Thanks for the upgrade Mark!

He also was lead engineer on the creation of the first gigahertz chip, capable of making one billion calculations per second. Outstanding work!

Young, gifted and Black, Dean did not rest on his laurels. He furthered his education by earning a master’s degree in electrical engineering from Florida Atlantic University in 1982 followed 10 years by a doctorate from Stanford University.

Dean holds over 20 patents and has been recognized with some of the following:

In 1996 he was named an IBM fellow, the first Black to receive the honor.

In 1997 he received the Black Engineer of the Year

He was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in

He is a member of the National Academy of Engineers.

Making Black Scientists: A Call to Action

Americans have access to some of the best science education in the world, but too often black students are excluded from these opportunities. This essential book by leading voices in the field of education reform offers an inspiring vision of how America’s universities can guide a new generation of African Americans to success in science. Educators, research scientists, and college administrators have all called for a new commitment to diversity in the sciences, but most universities struggle to truly support black students in these fields. Historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are different, though. Marybeth Gasman, widely celebrated as an education-reform visionary, and Thai-Huy Nguyen show that many HBCUs have proven adept at helping their students achieve in the sciences. There is a lot we can learn from these exemplary schools.

Once again, we see the genius that is within all of us emerge. This story should be a testament to all that you are capable of great things. There is no need to be a dumb athlete, you all are capable of both. Take advantage of the opportunities that are presented to you. The shame of it all is that there were so many people denied the opportunity in addition to these stellar performers who remain largely unknown. Those of you reading this have the ability to write your name in history and benefit all of humankind.
