Because of stereotypes we often overlook the possibilities that a woman can be an inventor. Carrying this idea forward, we often overlook others for various reasons that do not benefit society in general.

On the posts being featured, we see that despite opinions, people defy traditional role models. Because of the way people are depicted, many people begin to question their abilities which denies both them and society the benefits of creativity.

Let us drive a stake in that myth and look at Marie Van Britten Brown and her amazing invention that we are using today more than ever.

Inventions are a 2 part problem and solution. Aware of the fact that in her neighborhood that it would often take an inordinate amount of time for police to arrive when called she and her husband were concerned. They often worked different shifts, leaving her alone at home during various hours of the day and night. She was a nurse, and her husband Albert was an Electronic technician.

Marie started work on the problem by setting up 3 peepholes in the door to provide access to people of tall, average and short stature. She then set up a camera that could be adjusted to each of the peep holes.

The next part of the solution involved was to allow people inside the house to view the door from any room inside the house and the solution was a wireless television system. She used a radio controlled wireless system that could stream video to any television in the house. Then a 2 way microphone was used to allow communication between a person inside the home with a person outside. This only allowed you to know who was outside the house but did not take into account for an emergency.

She also included a feature that could unlock the door. Together they systems worked in unison and greatly improved home security.

Van Brittan Brown was 44 when she came up with the solution to the problem facing her, the home surveillance device with closed circuit television security system that keeps safe today. She then invented a system that contacted emergency response personnel with the tap of a button. The combination of innovations changed the world of home security and was the lead into the systems that many of us use today.

The system was designed for domestic use, but due to its effectiveness, it was quickly adopted to businesses. Marie Van Brittan Brown received an award from the National Science Committee for the invention. She is quoted in the New York Times “A woman alone could set off an alarm immediately by pressing a button, or if the system were installed in a doctor’s office, it might prevent holdups by drug addicts.”

Her invention has led to CCTV surveillance According to a 2016 New Scientist report 100 Million closed circuit cameras are now in operation worldwide and it started with Van Brittan Brown’s security system.

Marie Van Brittan Brown was born October 30 and died February 2, 1999. She and her husband Albert had 2 children. Her daughter followed in her footsteps and became a nurse and inventor.
