Kujichagulia

Kujichagulia means self-determination. This means that you determine who you are, what you are able to accomplish and ultimately success on your terms and defined by you!

This is important because many people accept the words of people that don’t know them as final. It may have been well intentioned, but it does not fit you. People have had their dreams derailed because of these comments. The person who wanted to be a doctor, lawyer, scientist, entrepreneur or whatever the dream may have been have accepted these words and allowed it to determine their entire future.

This is wrong and it does not have to be this way! As we study biographies and autobiographies of people who have succeeded, we see obstacles and other impediments that would have stopped a lesser person, BUT these people have succeeded because they had self-determination.

They defined themselves and what they were capable of doing. Self-determination is what allowed Dr. Patricia Bath to invent the instrumentation and procedure that is widely used to save the sight of people around the world. Her work is used by many doctors performing cataract surgery.

Self-determination is what allowed Dr. Charles Drew to develop the blood bank in use around the world. He left the organization because he would not set up separate blood banks by race.

Self-determination is what allowed Dr. Mae Jamerson to go into space and beyond.

Self-determination is what allowed Elijah McCoy to develop an oiling system for trains, steamships and other machinery that when others tried to copy his invention, people insisted that they wanted “The Real McCoy”!

Self-determination is what prevents us from accepting anything but the best from ourselves. Take a look at the videos and see for yourself. Do make a plan for yourself and stick to it! The Seven Principles of Kwanzaa By Maia

This Kwanzaa millions of Africans all over the world come again together to celebrate family, community and culture and to recommit them to creating and practicing good in the world, using the Nguzo Saba, the Seven Principles, as the fundamental framework and foundation to achieve this. Thus, as our ancestors and elders before us, we come again together to reinforce the bonds between us as persons and peoples, and to give thanks for the harvest of good we have gathered from the fertile fields of our lands, the fruitful fields of our lives, and the bruising and blood-stained battlefields of our struggles. We come together again also to commemorate the past, to raise and praise the sacred names and sustaining practices of the ancestors and to recommit ourselves to the dignity-affirming and life-enhancing views and values they have left to ground and guide us. Consciously following in the cultural footsteps of our ancestors and elders, we come together also to celebrate the good in and of the world, the good of family, community and culture, the good of loving-kindness and care, the good of respect for ourselves and others, the good of life and love, of sharing and together, working to build and sustain the world we all want and deserve to live in.
