Next, we have James Armistead who played an extremely important role in the United States winning the American Revolutionary War.

Armistead was a great admirer of Marquis de Lafayette. It is acknowledged that he wanted to work with Lafayette and volunteered to join the militia to do so. He went to work as a spy for the Continental Army.

Armistead went to the British on the pretext that he was escaping the Continental Army and earned the trust of high ranking officers working as a servant for them. His proximity to General Cornwallis and others put him in position to hear critical plans.

He relayed this valuable information to Lafayette and the Continental Army.

Meanwhile he was so trusted by the British that they asked him to spy on the Continental Army. He became a double spy and provided false information to the British while supplying accurate information to Continental Army. His role was critical to winning the war

Lafayette praised Armistead, his dedication and service.

Lafayette was highly upset when he found that Armistead was not freed after the war. He was not eligible under the 1873 Slave-Soldier Act that freed soldiers. Armistead was considered a spy and not a soldier for purposes of the act.

When Lafayette discovered that Armistead had not been freed for his service, he wrote letters resulting in Armistead’s freedom. Armistead was so grateful, he assumed Lafayette as his last name. He was from that day known as James Armistead Lafayette.
