Benjamin Banneker – self-educated person and editor of his own almanac. Banneker was able to predict with great precision astronomical events such as eclipses 10 years in advance.

Benjamin Banneker, a free man, was the son of an ex-slave named Robert. Robert’s wife Mary was the daughter of a former indentured servant, an English woman, named Molly. Molly’s husband was an ex slave who is reported to have come from tribal royalty in West Africa.

His maternal grandmother taught him to read. Although he attended school for a short time, he was primarily self-educated. His love of learning and reading allowed him to show his brilliance. He taught himself mathematics and excelled in all manner of endeavor that had a foundation in the sciences.

Banneker was able to obtain books because of the Ellicott family. A family of entrepreneurs who thrived by building gristmills. George Ellicott had a large personal library and loaned Banneker many books on astronomy and other scientific fields.

At an early age, he constructed an irrigation system for the family farm. He saw a pocket watch and learned the mechanism so well he was able to construct a clock in which he plotted and carved the components from wood. He assembled the clock from memory. This clock kept extremely accurate time for over 40 years. The clock was destroyed in a fire that burned Banneker’s home to the ground as he was being eulogized.

His ability to read and his love of mathematics allowed him to learn astronomy. He was able to predict with great precision, astronomical events 10 years in the future. This knowledge allowed him to publish an almanac that was one of the most widely read and relied upon publications of the time.

Banneker showed excellence in all manner of mathematical work as shown by his calculations of astronomical events with great precision.

Banneker surveyed and laid out the boundaries of the City of Washington, DC.

Some scholars put his abilities and achievements on the same level as Benjamin Franklin.

Dear Benjamin Banneker

Throughout his life Banneker was troubled that all blacks were not free. And so, in 1791, he wrote to Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson, who had signed the Declaration of Independence. Banneker attacked the institution of slavery and dared to call Jefferson a hypocrite for owning slaves. Jefferson responded. This is the story of Benjamin Banneker–his science, his politics, his morals, and his extraordinary correspondence with Thomas Jefferson. Illustrated in full-page scratchboard and oil paintings by Caldecott Honor artist Brian Pinkney.

Throughout his life, Benjamin Banneker was known and admired for his work in science, mathematics, and astronomy, just to name a few pursuits. But even when he was born in Maryland in 1731, he was already an extraordinary person for that time period. He was born free at a time in America when most African Americans were slaves.
