Hiram Rhodes Revels – Mississippi Senator

By

John C Abercrombie

Hiram Rhodes Revels was born free in Fayetteville, North Carolina. His father was a Baptist preacher of African and Croatan Indian heritage, his mother Scottish.

Although it was illegal in North Carolina to educate Blacks, Revels attended a school taught by a free Black woman. He later moved to attend Beech Grove Quaker Seminary for Black students in Liberty, Indiana.

In 1845, he was ordained in the African Methodist Episcopal church. He also worked as a barber.

As a moderate with outstanding oratorical skills he was selected to fill a vacant seat in the U.S. Senate in 1870.

Revels traveled in many backwoods areas in Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, and Tennessee and was even jailed in Missouri for preaching to Black people.

At one time Revels was principal of a Black School in Baltimore. He subsequently attended college on scholarship and was one of the few Black men in the United States with at least some college education in 1857.

When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Revels recruited several regiments of Black soldiers. In 1862 when they were allowed to fight, he served as chaplain.

In 1863, he established a freedman’s school.

Because of his education, Revels was important to the Republican party. Because of his education he became involved in politics and won his first elected position as alderman in 1868.

Because of his moderate and compassionate political opinions and hard work, he won support from both Blacks and Whites. In 1869, he won a seat in the Mississippi state senate.

Revels was selected to fill an unexpired term of Senator Albert Brown following the readmission of Mississippi at the end of the Civil War.
