Edward Hector was more popularly known as Ned Hector and was a hero of the Battle of Brandywine. He also participated in the Battle of Germantown.

Hector was a teamster and ran a wagon and team of horses in the 3rd Pennsylvania Artillery Regiment under the command of Colonel Proctor. The position occupied by the 3rd was being overrun by the British and Hessians. The order was given to abandon all equipment, the guns, wagons, even the horses and “save yourself”

It is reported that Hector said, “They can’t have my team! I will save my horses and myself”. Not only did he save them, but he grabbed the abandoned guns left by the fleeing soldiers, threw them in the wagon, fought off the pursers and got the heck out of there with the only equipment that the regiment had at that point.

The heroic actions of Ned Hector were vastly different than his commanding officer who was court martialed for leaving the field of battle “in an un-officer way.”

Hector was honored in 1850 by the residents of Conshohocken by petition to the Borough council to develop and name the road “Hector”. In 1976 a historical plaque was erected at the intersection of Hector and Fayette Street honoring Ned and the many Africans who served in the American Revolutionary War. Ned Hector lived in the Morristown area and died in 1834 at the age of 90.

While history often portrays Blacks as lacking in courage, history is filled with stories of so many acts of bravery under fire. This is one of the reasons the need to get these stories out is so important.

Although Hector served with distinction, he was never granted a pension as were other soldiers in the Continental Army. He was, however granted a $40 donation for his service.
