Race and Racism – The Shocking Truth

A Look at Race
By
John C Abercrombie

The subject of race is difficult to talk about. Even those who proclaim that they are race neutral have strong opinions on the subject. Because it is such a volatile subject, any suggestion of racism is negatively viewed by most people.

Thus, we have never had an open honest conversation on the subject outside of some small groups. Nothing of substance.

Many people feel that it is a one sided proposition, that the only people who have racial prejudice are White. That Black people harbor no such feelings.

Because race is involved in so many aspects of life, those who are unaware of it and the effects think it is all over and that we should just forget about the subject. Those affected are in awe and disbelief that others can’t see it in all of its forms and the damage inflicted.

We therefore end up in two camps. We end up in a position where the problem will not go away because we are too vested in our position to openly discuss even the question of if there is a problem.

We have people who have immigrated to this country in search of the American Dream, while we have people who were born here that do not have their share of that dream. Again, we get into 2 camps. One group saying that we made it, why can’t you? The other still wondering why the disparate treatment has played such a big difference in the entire picture.

That being said, there are a variety of videos and books below that point out different points of view.

This post is intended to encourage discussion, not argument on this topic. As you dive into the materials here, remember the intent is to encourage discussion on items that may not have been considered and discussed before. Calm rational discussion. People can disagree without being disagreeable. This is the way problems are solved.

As we tackle the matter of discussion, there are questions that will be raised and answered that many have never considered. For example, why are our neighborhoods so segregated and why has this existed for such a long time?

This post is only one part of a month long series that looks at various matters that have long been overlooked. Until the matter is discussed openly and honestly will forever be divided and at odds without understanding why.

Einstein on Race and Racism

Nearly fifty years after his death, Albert Einstein remains one of America’s foremost cultural icons. A thicket of materials, ranging from scholarly to popular, have been written, compiled, produced, and published about his life and his teachings. Among the ocean of Einsteinia-scientific monographs, biographies, anthologies, bibliographies, calendars, postcards, posters, and Hollywood films-however, there is a peculiar void when it comes to the connection that the brilliant scientist had with the African American community. Nowhere is there any mention of his close relationship with Paul Robeson, despite Einstein’s close friendship with him, or W.E.B. Du Bois, despite Einstein’s support for him.

Teaching about Race and Racism in the College Classroom: Notes from a White Professor (Teaching and Learning in Higher Education)

Teaching about race and racism can be a difficult business. Students and instructors alike often struggle with strong emotions, and many people have robust preexisting beliefs about race. At the same time, this is a moment that demands a clear understanding of racism. It is important for students to learn how we got here and how racism is more than just individual acts of meanness. Students also need to understand that colorblindness is not an effective anti-racism strategy.
