Walter Francis White

In the story of Walter Francis White, we find issues that we seldom talk about. We sometimes act as if race is only about appearance. We go down the rabbit hole concentrating on color which is extremely misleading and not always a good indicator of race.

Walter Francis White was of both African and European ancestry on both his father’s side as well as his mother. All members of his immediate family were family were very light. His mother Madeline had blue eyes and blonde hair. Madeline the mother of Walter was daughter of a slave Dilsia and her master, William Henry Harrison, who later became the 9th president of the United States.

Here are the words of White in describing his physical appearance. “I am a Negro. My skin is white, my eyes are blue, my hair is blond. The traits of my race are nowhere visible upon me.” Of his 32 great-great-great-grandparents, 5 were Black, the other 27 White.

Walter’s parents attended what is now Clark Atlanta University, one of the South’s Historically Black College and University (HBCU). His father became a postal worker and his mother a teacher. Walter attended Atlanta Public Schools finishing Atlanta University High School in 1912 and the college in 1916.

Although his physical appearance was that of a White person, he never denied his Black heritage. At the age of 8, he threw a rock at a White kid who called him a derogatory name because he was drinking from the Black water fountain.

In school, he was exposed to instruction influenced by a decade of W E B DuBois research. The family belonged to the First Congregational Church founded by the American Missionary Association and based in the North. This congregation was among the most socially, politically and financially powerful in Atlanta.

Some of the more impactful work of White centered around his appearance. Walter Francis White passed as a White man investigating crimes for the National Association of Colored People (NAACP). He was able to work in hostile environments and gain communication with Whites in cases involving the civil rights of Blacks. White became involved with Klan groups and exposed information involving Lynchings.

In Little Rock, Arkansas he escaped on a train, having his identity discovered. As he was leaving, the train conductor informed White that he was missing the fun as they had identified a Yellow N***** and they were going to Lynch him. Remember White had no appearance of being Black.

As we have seen in the case of Homer Plessy, there are Blacks who have the appearance of being White. In the videos and books below, we explore this question in more detail. It is significant with the advances in DNA testing that an estimated 3.5+% of all Whites in this country have at least 1% of direct Black blood. Many people are completely unaware of this heritage, but in a country that places so much emphasis on being White, it is no wonder that more people have not simply moved to an area where they are unknown and assumed the identity of a White person.

Nature Knows No Color-Line:

Research into the Negro Ancestry in the White Race In Nature Knows No Color-Line, originally published in 1952, historian Joel Augustus Rogers examines the origins of racial hierarchy and the color problem. Rogers was a humanist who believed that there were no scientifically evident racial divisions―all humans belong to one “race.” He believed that color prejudice generally evolved from issues of domination and power between two physiologically different groups. According to Rogers, color prejudice was then used a rationale for domination, subjugation and warfare. Societies developed myths and prejudices in order to pursue their own interests at the expense of other groups. This book argues that many instances of the contributions of black people had been left out of the history books and gives many examples.
