COVID 19 Vaccine and Development

This should answer questions you may have about the vaccine

By

John C Abercrombie

After a devastating year of watching over 26,503,340 people suffer from the horrors of Corvid 19 and watching 445,913 people die, we have a vaccine that can make a significant difference in life returning to “normal”. However, many people of Color have expressed skepticism about taking the vaccine.

Before we reach the conclusion that this is beyond reason, let us explore the past history of this country with respect to health care. You will find very valid reasons for the reluctance to accept the benefits of the vaccine.

Many are familiar with the “Tuskegee Experiment” in which hundreds of men were sacrificed for the study of syphilis.

Told they would be receiving treatment; these American men were none the less denied treatment even when a cure was found. The final stages of the disease results in neurological complications and even death.

We know of Dr. James Marion Sims, who performed surgery on Blacks without benefit of anesthesia, believing that they did not feel pain.

Sims is honored by a statue in Central Park, New York City.

We have seen Blacks selected to try out controversial, risky procedures, often first time trials that at times cause extreme pain and still end in death.

Then Black people are the ones often denied treatment  when it comes to having access to the procedures as the result of being of a lack of medical coverage. Once the hazards have been worked out.

Many have seen segregated medical facilities that were not equal. Even the refusal of emergency vehicles to transport injured or sick people. Yes, it sounds like a horror story and in many instances it is. There has been significant improvement in this area following legislation to integrate medical facilities in the mid 1960s.

We have seen the leaders of the country flaunt the issue and deliver mixed messages about the seriousness of the consequences. This just points out that we need more people involved in all aspects of our care.

In this post we look at Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett and her role in the development as a major participant in the development of a vaccine.

If you have any doubts about the vaccine, please review the following information before reaching your final decision.
