Juneteenth for Kids

Juneteenth is a funny sounding word. It is actually two words joined together and is actually June and Nineteenth combined. This is called a Portmanteau, the blending of two or more words like Motor and Hotel becomes motel. Breakfast and Lunch becomes brunch.

Many adults do not know about the holiday because it was local for many years until people began to learn about it. As you may know slavery was a cruel practice that was in America and other countries for a long time. During the Civil War President Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States of America issued the Emancipation Proclamation which freed the slaves in the Confederated States of America. It did not free the slaves in the slave states that did not join the Confederacy.

This meant that the slaves in those Confederate states were to be freed on January 1, 1963. Many slaveowners knew this and moved their slaves West to the state of Texas. The slaves did not learn of their freedom until General Gordon Granger read it to them on June 19th, 1965, 2 ½ years after they had been freed. There was a great celebration. This day was observed in Texas until people moved from Texas to other parts of the country and the celebration spread with them.

Today the holiday is being celebrated in more places and by more people.

Most people see July 4th as Independence day to celebrate the freedom of America from England. This freed White people, but Black people remained in slavery although they fought for independence from England. The first person to die in the Revolutionary War was Crispus Attucks a Black man.

It was not until June 19, 1965, until Black people were free. Many see this as the day when all people became free. There are people working to see it become a National Holiday because of its significance.

As you scroll down, you will see some videos and books that are written and produced to help you understand da significance of the day. Freedom for ALL people!
