The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain, Sr.

By

On November 19, 2011, we watched the news about Kenneth Chamberlain, Sr. A 68 year old retired United States Marine. After serving in the Marine Corp, he worked for the Westchester County New York Department of Corrections for 20 years. He was shot to death after a call triggered by his LifeAid medical alert necklace was inadvertently triggered.

White Plains New York police were dispatched after he failed to respond to the inadvertent triggering of his necklace and failing to respond to a call made by the alarm company to check on his condition. The call was for Medical Assistance. Please note that this is NOT a reflection on the medical alert, it is 100% on the White Plains, New York Police Department.

Chamberlain objected to allowing police into his house and it seems that he was frightened about treatment that he would receive from the police. Word on the street is that there was a White Plains unit on the streets that was not friendly to people of color.

The request for medical assistance was cancelled by the Alarm system after they contacted Chamberlain and several of his relatives. Yet the police insisted on entry and broke down his steel door and found him standing shirtless in boxer shorts and not advancing on them. They shot him at least twice with tasers, shot him 4 times with bean bags (less than lethal) shotguns before murdering him in his own apartment.

In addition, he had a relative that lived in the building and responded to the scene, identifying herself and pleading to help confirm that he was indeed ok. She was turned away as were several other relatives. See the videos that accompany this post. Continue to scroll down.

While the call was for medical assistance and was cancelled by the alarm company, the police spent over an hour breaking down the door. It is also possible that Kenneth Chamberlain was suffering from mental illness which is not a crime.

Chamberlain is heard on recordings of the case as it is unfolding calling attention that he is going to be killed by the police, which was prophetic. The police dismissed the offers of help from the Niece of Chamberlain and even his son. It seems as if they were on a mission to annihilate him.

The audio recording which has been preserved shows police cursing and calling Chamberlain the N-word which was totally uncalled for and shows what is permitted by the White Plains police

The shooting was the topic of the film “The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain.” Morgan Freeman the renowned actor and director has made a film about the life of, including the tragedy of being a Black man in America. This is covered in the videos below. Notice, the content while not graphic is intense.

It is actions like this that make people of color suspicious of law enforcement officers. Even when it is apparent that they are overreacting, they are time and time again cleared of any wrongdoing by people that are not treated in this way. In fact, they don’t even see this type of action taken in their neighborhood and they are prone to take the word of police over fact no matter how compelling.

The summary above is a great look into this matter, but we encourage you to further enlighten yourself with videos and books selected to enhance your understanding of this matter.

New Details Emerge Over Police Fatal Shooting of Elderly Ex-Marine Kenneth Chamberlain, DemocracyNow.org

Democracy Now! co-host Juan Gonzalez has obtained a photograph of White Plains police officer Anthony Carelli, the officer alleged to have fired the two shots that killed Kenneth Chamberlain, Sr., the 68-year-old former Marine whose medical alert button accidentally summoned police to his apartment last November. The police union has blasted the release of the officer’s name, saying he deserves the right to a fair and impartial inquiry. Chamberlain’s son said he agrees but notes that the White Plains police failed to grant his father the same opportunity.

Rise of the Warrior Cop:

The Militarization of America’s Police Forces This groundbreaking history of how American police forces have been militarized is now revised and updated. Newly added material brings the story through 2020, including analysis of the Ferguson protests, the Obama and Trump administrations, and the George Floyd protests. The last days of colonialism taught America’s revolutionaries that soldiers in the streets bring conflict and tyranny. As a result, our country has generally worked to keep the military out of law enforcement. But over the last two centuries, America’s cops have increasingly come to resemble ground troops. The consequences have been dire: the home is no longer a place of sanctuary, the Fourth Amendment has been gutted, and police today have been conditioned to see the citizens they serve as enemies.

Cop in Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain ID’d, Sued in 2008 Racism Case. 1 of 2 DemocracyNow.org – In a broadcast exclusive, we reveal the name of the police officer who allegedly killed 68-year-old Kenneth Chamberlain, the retired African-American Marine who was shot dead in his own home in White Plains, New York, in November after he inadvertently triggered his medical-alert pendant. Documented in audio recordings, the White Plains police reportedly used a racial slur, burst through Chamberlain’s door, tasered him, then shot him dead. The alleged shooter, Officer Anthony Carelli, is due in court later this month in an unrelated 2008 police brutality case. He is accused of being the most brutal of a group of officers who allegedly beat two brothers of Jordanian descent and called them “rag heads.” Despite repeated requests from Chamberlain’s family for the name of the officer who killed him, White Plains Public Safety Commissioner David Chong only named Carelli as the shooter this morning, after his name appeared in an article written by Democracy Now’s Juan Gonzalez in the New York Daily News. The White Plains police have refused to say whether Carelli has been disciplined or assigned to desk duty after the fatal shooting of Chamberlain. We get an update on the Chamberlain case from the victim’s son, Kenneth Chamberlain, Jr., and his two attorneys, Mayo Bartlett and Abdulwali Muhammad. Kenneth Chamberlain, Jr. reacts to the news that his father’s alleged killer has been accused of beating people in the past, saying it triggers memories of his father’s death. “The last time I actually really saw my father other than the funeral was at the hospital with his eyes wide open, his tongue hanging out of his mouth and two bullet holes in his chest. And I am staring at my father wondering, what happened?” Attorney Abdulwali Muhammad notes that audio recordings of the incident were key in debunking police attempts to cast Kenneth Chamberlain as a hatchet-wielding, mentally disturbed man, while ignoring the fact that he was shot in his own home after accidentally triggering a medical alert. “But for the fact that we have the tapes, we would not be able to present this story that we’ve had to the public and make our demands that the tapes be released (and) that the officer’s name be released as well.”

Say Their Names:

101 Black Unarmed Women, Men and Children Killed By Law Enforcement: George Floyd – Breonna Taylor – Tamir Rice – Michael Brown – James Chaney – Oscar Grant – Sandra Bland George Floyd’s murder was as shocking as it was common. In fact, there is an entire museum in Montgomery, Alabama, dedicated to 4,400 lynching victims. But the sad truth is, 4,400 were only the reported ones. And, if you look into the statistics, many of the Lynchings were perpetrated by, or sanctioned by law enforcement. This compilation of lost lives is more of an encyclopedia and serves as a record for the 101 deaths of unarmed people of color attributed to law enforcement. From Tamir Rice to Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Aubrey to James Earl Chaney; many you have heard about, and many you have not. We document who they were as people, the details surrounding their deaths, as well as if there were any arrests or convictions of officers involved. Unfortunately, this is an incomplete record, but an important reminder just the same. We owe them that much.

We see incidents like this day in and day out. We are outraged, but only for a moment. We react with disgust, but only for a minute or so. We don’t understand it. Those that don’t see things like this in their neighborhoods don’t have to contend with it and only scratch their heads. Those exposed to this treatment all of their lives wonder when will it ever stop. The answer is when both groups agree it is time to stand up and make their objections known. Much centers on the subject of Qualified Immunity. To see more on this subject, click this link.
