Mental Health Part 2 – True Effects of Racism

By

John C Abercrombie

When Carter G Woodson started “Negro History Week” he chose a month honoring two people of significance to the Black experience, Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. His intent was that the unequal treatment of Blacks resulted from unfair treatment coming from people unaware of the many significant contributions made by people of color.

He strongly believed that once people learned about these contributions that all people would be on an even footing. While this is a noble cause, it has fallen far short of his dream. It is my opinion that it is in part due to the fact that the inequities are often swept under the rug and never discussed. Without this discussion, we don’t face the problem leaving a solution out of reach.

Failure to recognize the problem is like believing the cure for cancer is ignorance. If you don’t know you have it that you can’t die from it. Like a law enforcement officer failing to wear a protective vest because if shot, she may suffer a bruise and therefore proving that they don’t work. That football players should not wear helmets because a player can suffer a concussion while wearing one.

It is like the person who will not use a heater in the middle of winter because Jack Frost may be offended.

The strongest societies obtain benefit from contributors and this country is no different. In order to do this, we have to recover from the bliss and ignorance that comes with believing that there is no problem. Watch the videos that accompany this post and start a discussion. Do we have a problem?

In order to answer that question, you need to look at the videos that are included in this post below.

We see a side of life that is not mirrored in our lives, a subject that is considered taboo. It is necessary to face the reality that ignorance is not good for anyone. It is time to talk to people that have developed the skill of uncovering the reason and the path to healing. Take this subject matter with all due seriousness.
