Dr James R Gavin III – Diabetes

By

John C Abercrombie

Dr James R Gavin III did his undergraduate work at Livingstone College, a private liberal arts college located in  Salisbury, North Carolina, a Historically Black College and University (HBCU). He graduated magna cum laude in 1966 and earned his MD from Duke University in 1975.

In the interest of transparency, Dr Gavin was a roommate during my sophomore year at Livingstone. I probably believed that I was a scientific abnormality and was somehow part Neanderthal because of my habit of storing food outside the window and carrying around barbecue sandwiches in my pocket for several days. I think he was trying to figure how I avoided dying of food poisoning or something.

A study in contrasts, Gavin was focused, me, not so much, but it is never too late, even if you are like me. 😊

With respect to him, he was focused and a well rounded student. He had his priorities and was popular and well known on campus because of his academic accomplishments. There was no doubt that he would become a doctor specializing in diabetes and be very resolute.

After Livingstone he attended Emory University in Atlanta earning a PHD in biochemistry in 1970 and a MD from Duke in 1975.

Always a resolute academic he began to be recognized when he started work as a lieutenant commander in the United States Public Health service. Today he still serves as a reserve officer. After getting his MD he:

  • worked as a pathologist at Duke University Hospital.
  • The Washington University of Medicine as associate professor of medicine
  • Worked on diabetes research at the University of Oklahoma
  • Howard Hughes Medical Institute as senior scientific officer
  • Director of HHMI Health Research Scholars Program
  • Named Morehouse College School of Medicine president in 2002.

His service to others includes:

  • President of the American Diabetes Association
  • Editorial bord of the American Journal of Physiology
  • Emory University Medical for Distinguished Achievement
  • Distinguished Service Banting Medal from the American Diabetes Association
  • Internist of the Year – National Medical Association

Dr Gavin currently serves on the bord of directors of Baxter International and is a staunch supporter of affirmative action.

The noted leader in the field of diabetes, he is:

  • the CEO and Chief Medical Officer of: Healing Our Village, Inc
  • Clinical Professor of Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine
  • Clinical Professor of Medicine at Indiana University of Medicine

Dr Gavin also has worked with the Kapche Litigation Team where he was recognized for his work in defending the right  of people with diabetes to live free of discrimination. Kapche was rejected by the FBI because he was using injections to control his diabetes rather than using a pump. They won the case.

With a long distinguished career of service, Dr Gavin serves on the Board of Trustees of Livingstone college and in 2021 was selected to receive the Endocrine Society’s Laureate Award.

The Endocrine Society is the foremost professional organization for endocrine scientists, researchers, practitioners and educators in the world. The annual award recognizes a career commitment to mentoring and a significant positive impact on mentees’ education and career. Gavin has contributed to the career development of in excess of 300 minority physician-scientist. A most noble and noteworthy contribution to the advancement of medicine, filling a much needed vacuum in the world of health care.

During his more than 35-year involvement with the RWJF AMFDP, he has contributed to the career development of more than 300 minority physician-scientists.

“This is a very special award to me and a pinnacle personal honor because the award is driven by nominations from young scholars who feel that I have had a positive impact on their lives and careers,” Gavin said. “This is as meaningful and important to me as any brick-and-mortar award. I am humbled and honored by this designation.”

Gavin said in all of his mentoring activities over the decades, he always echoes the excellent mentoring he received at Livingstone College and how important that experience has been for the entirety of his career.

“Those who assert that I have made a difference in their lives always know that they owe a bit of debt to Livingstone,” he said.

We see a man and career devoted to making life better from the multitude of people who suffer from the debiliting effects of diabetes. It is hoped that this post and the work of this incredible man spur you to take control of your life. Realize the progress being made and live long with quality of life, thanks to the work of Dr Gavin and others like him.
