Marcelite Harris –  Major General – First Black Female General Officer in the United States Air Force

By

John C Abercrombie

Major General Marcelite J Harris is well known as the first Black female general officer in the United States Air Force is the way I would love to begin this post. Unfortunately, we do not often talk about people of major accomplishment in America, particularly if they are not White and male. This is a shame as it could inspire so many to dream of the success, they are capable of. A country grows great when it offers opportunity to all rather than withholding it from selected citizens.

We discuss this and other topics every Sunday at 4:00 pm Eastern time, 1:00 pm Pacific use the following information to join us. Ask questions, express yourself.

Our mission is to provide those historical facts that have been omitted from history. Believing that America is strong because of contributions by all groups and individuals.
In addition to the lack of information, there seems to be a campaign to promote the disenfranchisement of groups by eliminating the contributions, mistreatment and inclusion. Instead promoting negative depictions which in the absence of other information paints a highly unfavorable picture.

We provide information that exists but is not included in mainstream history. Many wonder about the validity of these stories, so we include videos to enhance the experience and books to allow you to take advantage of additional materials that have existed over time.

To those ends, the books can be purchased from our partner Amazon. It is possible to not only read about the book, but to sample them as well, read a section or listen before deciding if it is one that you like. Click on the link. Note: many of these books are available in several forms, such as hard cover or soft cover, Kindle – eBooks that can be read on your smartphone or other device free with a free download, or Audible where the books are read to you. Again, they can be delivered instantly and enjoyed on phones or other devices with a free download.

We support our work by partnering with partners who pay us a small royalty for purchases made through our links. Many of these are to products that you may find interesting, however it is not necessary to purchase that product. How do you use the links then? Many links take you to several products so feel free to look. A Black Women’s History of the United States: ReVisioning American History, Book 5
A 2021 NAACP Image Award Nominee: Outstanding Literary Work – Non-Fiction

Honorable Mention for the 2021 Organization of American Historians Darlene Clark Hine Award

A vibrant and empowering history that emphasizes the perspectives and stories of African American women to show how they are – and have always been – instrumental in shaping our country.

In centering Black women’s stories, two award-winning historians seek both to empower African American women and to show their allies that Black women’s unique ability to make their own communities while combatting centuries of oppression is an essential component in our continued resistance to systemic racism and sexism. Daina Ramey Berry and Kali Nicole Gross offer an examination and celebration of Black womanhood, beginning with the first African women who arrived in what became the United States to African American women of today.

A Black Women’s History of the United States reaches far beyond a single narrative to showcase Black women’s lives in all their fraught complexities. Berry and Gross prioritize many voices: enslaved women, freedwomen, religious leaders, artists, queer women, activists, and women who lived outside the law. The result is a starting point for exploring Black women’s history and a testament to the beauty, richness, rhythm, tragedy, heartbreak, rage, and enduring love that abounds in the spirit of Black women in communities throughout the nation.

Amazons of Black Sparta, 2nd Edition: The Women Warriors of Dahomey
The only thoroughly documented Amazons in world history are the women warriors of Dahomey, an eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Western African kingdom. Once dubbed a ‘small black Sparta,’ residents of Dahomey shared with the Spartans an intense militarism and sense of collectivism. Moreover, the women of both kingdoms prided themselves on bodies hardened from childhood by rigorous physical exercise. But Spartan women kept in shape to breed male warriors, Dahomean Amazons to kill them. Originally palace guards, the Amazons had evolved by the 1760s into professional troops armed mainly with muskets, machetes and clubs. By the 1840s their numbers had grown to 6,000. The Amazons served under female officers and had their own bands, flags and insignia: they outdrilled, outshot and outfought men, became frontline troops and fought tenaciously and with great valor till the kingdom’s defeat by France in 1892.
Updated with a new preface by the author, Amazons of Black Sparta is the product of meticulous archival research and Alpern’s gift for narrative. It will stand as the most compr

Women’s History Month: Honoring Major General Marcelite J. Harris

**

Once again we see what happens when preparedness and opportunity come together. This is true in life and the reason we need to understand the relationship between enlightenment and success. Harris not only broken the stereotype of men only in the military, but the field where she excelled is also non-traditional. It is the individual that is vital to making the equation work. Remember and take this to heart and allow for all options that may appeal to you. Don’t let a committee select your success or failure. You can do it yourself and be committed to success.
